Each Wednesday, I ask a different artist the same three questions.
This week's featured artist is
. We met on Substack, I’m captivated by the unique art style she’s developed, it’s so original and expressive…and her writing is just as powerful, I’m sure you’ll agree.1. What first sparked your interest in creating art?
As long as I can remember, I have loved painting and drawing and making things. It has just been innate as far as I can tell.
2. What are your regrets?
I wish I had gone to an official art school and maybe had also gotten an MFA. But that’s just so I could have had more formal training, I guess. Although I did get a bachelors in studio art, most of my classes were in ceramics. So I’m basically a self-taught painter. I don’t know if I have really, any I can point to. I’ve had a diverse journey between my art and my work in the field of art therapy. So, other than that, I guess no real regrets which is great.
3. What wisdom would you offer someone beginning their art career, or exploring art for the first time at any stage in life?
I repeat this phrase often. Make art. Make lots and lots and lots of art. It’s just one of those things. You need to put time effort and energy into your craft. You have to want to live and breathe it. Possibly even feel that when you’re not creating you don’t feel complete. The time is needed to develop competency as well as a style that is unique to you. And really the only way to do that is by doing it over and over and over. And there are no short cuts. And sometimes it might take a person at least tens years or more of consistent art making before they see and real progress. And also know that the business of art is an entire other monster. Find someone to do that for you so that you can concentrate on your work.
